Crop residue
The importance of crop residue is that once it decomposes, it helps improve the effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) of the soil. This is why burning fields is discouraged; it kills the microorganisms that feed on the organic matter from plants and help convert fertilizers into nutrients that plants can use.
