Running a melee character in PoE 2 usually comes down to one question: can you stay in the fight long enough to make your hits matter? This Shield Wall Smith of Kitava setup answers that by mixing steady Fire conversion with real front-line defense, and it plays especially well once your gear starts to catch up through Path of Exile 2 Currency spending on the right upgrades. It is not a flashy zoom build, but it does make map progression feel a lot less punishing.

Why this setup works

The core idea is simple. Shield Wall gives you space to breathe, block paths, and force packs into awkward positions, while Avatar of Fire pushes your damage into a single element so your scaling does not feel split in five directions. That matters a lot in practice, because a lot of melee builds lose efficiency when they try to support too many damage types at once. Here, every decent offensive roll tends to pull its weight.

Smith of Kitava fits that plan because it naturally leans into armor, sustain, and Fire damage. You are basically building a character that can take a hit, keep swinging, and punish anything that gets stuck near the wall. Bosses are still bosses, so you do have to respect mechanics, but this setup gives you more room to mess up than most melee starters.

How I would play the skill setup

For actual gameplay, keep the rotation pretty lean. Drop Shield Wall first when you expect contact, then follow with your main Fire hit and a warcry or utility button when the pack or boss is committed. In my experience, people often overcomplicate this kind of build and end up losing tempo. You do not need a pile of active skills. You need clean spacing and enough damage to finish enemies before they start trading well.

Use your wall before you go in, not after you are already surrounded.
Upgrade your weapon often, even if the rest of your gear is still mediocre.
Prioritize life and resists early, because dead characters do zero DPS.
Do not chase random cold or lightning bonuses, since they do very little for this setup.
Keep an eye on mana costs if your attacks start feeling clunky in longer fights.

Gear and passive choices that actually matter

The weapon slot should stay focused on strong physical damage, then Fire conversion does the rest. Shield and armor pieces are mostly about making the build feel stable: life, armor, block, and resistances are the stats you notice every single map. Jewelry is where you clean up weaknesses, especially strength and any mana help you can get. Offensive stats are nice, but the build feels best when your defenses stop being a problem.

Passive tree priorities are similarly straightforward. Pick up Fire damage, burning or ignite support, melee scaling, and any area bonuses that help your main hit connect better. After that, fill in life, armor, block, and regen. A lot of players get distracted trying to force extra damage early, then wonder why every rare mob feels sketchy. I'd rather have slightly lower sheet damage and keep my flask usage calm.

Mapping and bossing without the stress

For maps, pace yourself a bit. This is not the kind of build that wants to sprint blindly into every pack and hope armor saves the day. Let Shield Wall shape the fight, keep your buffs up, and hit from a position where enemies are forced to path badly. Against bosses, the main thing is patience. Save your burst for safe windows, stay close enough to keep uptime, and do not tunnel so hard that you eat an obvious slam. If your setup is tuned properly, the clear is solid and the boss damage feels dependable rather than spiky.

Where the build is strongest

The biggest strength here is consistency. You are not praying for weird RNG to make the character function, and you are not locked into a glass-cannon playstyle that falls apart in tougher content. The build asks for sensible gearing, decent weapon upgrades, and a little discipline in combat. That is also why it scales well into late progression, especially when you can afford smarter upgrades and maybe pick up cheap POE 2 Divine Orbs for the pieces that really matter. If you like melee that feels steady instead of frantic, this one does the job.
